About this trip
Furmanov Peak is the most approachable summit in the Ile-Alatau range south of Almaty, topping out at 3,053 m and offering a clear view across the city on calm days. The route begins at Medeu — the outdoor skating complex at 1,691 m — and follows the Kimasar Gorge upward through a belt of Tian Shan spruce before breaking into open alpine terrain. The ascent gains roughly 1,360 m over 8 km; the trail is well-worn but unmarked, and sections near the summit require careful footing over loose boulders.
About two-thirds of the way up, at around 2,500 m, the ridge opens to a full panorama and a well-known metal swing — a landmark that doubles as a reliable rest point and waypoint for navigation. Above this the terrain steepens through boulder fields to the rocky summit cairn. The descent follows the same route; most hikers allow 4–5 hours up and 2.5–3 hours down. Starting before 08:00 is strongly recommended to finish before afternoon thunderstorms develop, which are common in July and August.
Ile-Alatau National Park surrounds the entire route. Rangers periodically check passports and collect an ecological fee at informal posts; carry your passport and cash or a card. The park's spruce forests shelter Tian Shan bears and wolves, though encounters on this heavily-used trail are rare. Snow typically closes the upper section from November through April; the season runs late May through mid-October.
A sedan reaches Medeu from central Almaty in about 30–40 minutes via the well-paved road up the Small Almaty Gorge (Malaya Almatinka). City bus 12 from the Kazakhstan Hotel on Dostyk Avenue covers the same route for 80 KZT, making this one of the few serious mountain hikes in Central Asia accessible without a car.

Stop 1
Almaty — Start
Depart central Almaty heading south on Dostyk Avenue, continuing onto Gornaya Street into the Small Almaty Gorge. The road is fully paved and carries steady traffic on summer mornings. Bus 12 departs from the Kazakhstan Hotel stop on Dostyk Avenue and runs directly to Medeu for 80 KZT; journey time is about 40 minutes depending on traffic. If driving, turn into the Medeu car park on the left just before the skating complex. Fill up with fuel in the city — there is no station at Medeu.
Tip: Leave Almaty by 07:00 at the latest to start hiking by 07:30–08:00. Afternoon storms are common in summer; most hikers aim to be descending by 14:00.
Stop 2
Medeu — Trailhead
- From previous:
- 14 km · 35 min drive
- Stay:
- ~0.25 h
Medeu sits at 1,691 m and is best known for its outdoor speed-skating oval, which hosted world records through the Soviet era. The trail to Furmanov Peak begins at the bus stop: descend about 20 m below the main stop level and follow the road east into Kimasar Gorge along the Komissarovka River. After roughly 1 km of asphalt the road turns to packed dirt and the gorge narrows. A spring about 2.5 km in offers safe water to top up bottles. Watch for a left-hand fork after the spring — this is the Furmanov ridge route; the right fork continues up the gorge floor and leads elsewhere.
Tip: Toilets are available at the Medeu complex before the trail begins. Stock up on water here — the spring in the gorge is reliable in summer, but treat it if uncertain. Park rangers sometimes check passports at an informal post in the lower gorge; have yours accessible.
Stop 3
Kimasar Ridge — The Swing
- From previous:
- 4 km · 0 min drive
- Stay:
- ~0.5 h
After the fork the trail climbs steeply through Tian Shan spruce, crossing the remains of a Soviet-era ski lift — the rusted pylons are still visible in the forest. The gradient eases onto a broad eastern ridge at around 2,200 m where the trees thin and the first views of Almaty appear to the north. Continuing south along the ridge, at approximately 2,500 m, a metal frame swing marks the Enthusiasts Clearing. The clearing is a popular turnaround for casual walkers; in good weather, Furmanov's rocky summit is visible directly ahead, another 550 m of elevation above. From here the terrain is open alpine: grass slopes giving way to boulder fields. Navigation is intuitive in clear conditions but can become difficult in cloud.
Tip: The swing clearing is the last reliable rest and turnaround point with a clear path back. If clouds are building or anyone in the group is struggling, this is the sensible place to stop. Do not rush the final section — the boulders near the top are loose and require attention.
Stop 4
Furmanov Peak (3,053 m)
- From previous:
- 4 km · 0 min drive
- Stay:
- ~0.5 h
The summit of Furmanov Peak is marked by a small cairn and occasional flagging at 3,053 m. The final 500 m of altitude gain from the swing involves sustained scrambling over boulders; there is no fixed route — follow the ridge crest and pick the most stable footing. The view from the top takes in all of Almaty spread across the steppe to the north, the Ile river valley beyond, and the higher ridges of the Trans-Ili Alatau to the south and east, including the glaciated faces above Big Almaty Lake. On clear days the peaks above Shymbulak's Talgar Pass are visible to the southwest. Allow 20–30 minutes at the summit before beginning the descent, which follows the same route back to Medeu.
Tip: Wind picks up quickly near the summit; put on your warm layer before you need it. The descent takes 2.5–3 hours; a 14:00 departure from the summit is generally safe for returning to Medeu before dark. Do not attempt the route in rain — the boulders become slippery and the ridge trail is hard to follow.
