Before you go
- Vehicle
- Sedan is fine
- Permit
- Not required
- Entrance fee
- Around 800–900 KZT per person ecological fee collected at the park eco-post. Vehicle entry fee of approximately 1,500–3,000 KZT may be charged separately depending on group size. Bring cash — card readers at the checkpoint are unreliable.
- Peak altitude
- 1200 m
- Cell coverage
- Patchy
- Fuel
- Last reliable fuel stop with modern pumps is Chundzha (~150 km from Almaty). Smaller petrol points exist in Chilik/Shelek but supply can be inconsistent. Refuel in Almaty before departure and top up again in Chundzha on the way out.
- Road status
- A-351 is sealed tarmac in good condition for the full ~190 km to the park turnoff. The 10 km spur to the Valley of Castles visitor centre is also paved. Side tracks to Bestamak Canyon and the Temir section are compacted gravel, passable by sedan when dry; avoid after rain.
About this trip
Charyn Canyon runs for 154 km through the Almaty Region, cut by the Charyn River into layers of sedimentary red sandstone over millions of years. The most visited section, the Valley of Castles, is a 3 km corridor of towers and fins worn into shapes that catch the light differently at every hour. The canyon floor sits at roughly 300 m elevation, and the walls climb 150–300 m above — enough vertical relief to feel genuinely dramatic without requiring technical gear.
The drive follows the A-351 highway east from Almaty across open steppe, through a toll gate near the city edge, and then southeast past the small towns of Chilik and Chundzha before a signed 10 km spur road drops into the national park. The road is sealed all the way to the visitor centre; a dry-weather gravel track continues to the quieter Bestamak and Temir canyons if you want to stretch the day.
Charyn National Park was established in 2004 and the infrastructure reflects that relative youth — a visitor centre with toilets and a small café, marked trails (LH201 is the main Valley of Castles loop, 3 km, about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace), and an eco-post that collects the entrance fee. Summer temperatures at canyon floor can reach 45 °C; spring and autumn are far more comfortable. The trail descends steeply from the rim and there is almost no shade below, so an early start matters.
The relic ash-tree forest 20 km further along the river is worth the detour if you have a second hour to spare — Sogdian ash trees have grown in that gorge since before the last ice age, and the microclimate under the canopy is noticeably cooler than the open canyon.

Stop 1
Almaty
Leave Almaty by 06:30 to beat the city's slow morning traffic and reach the canyon before the midday heat builds at the floor. The route heads east on Raiymbek Avenue, joins the A-351 (Kuldja highway), and passes through a toll booth about 11 km out. Fuel up at a city petrol station before you go — the forecourts near the toll are convenient but not always the cheapest. The steppe opens immediately once you clear the suburbs and the road runs straight and fast.

Stop 2
Chundzha
- From previous:
- 150 km · 95 min drive
- Stay:
- ~0.25 h
Chundzha (also spelled Zhungar or Dzhungar) is a small town roughly 150 km from Almaty along the A-351, reachable in about 90 minutes. It has the last reliable modern fuel station with card payment before the canyon turnoff. The town itself is quiet — a petrol stop, a basic canteen, and a general store. Fill the tank here regardless of gauge reading and pick up any snacks you forgot. The remaining 50 km to the park entrance runs through increasingly arid steppe and the turnoff is easy to miss if you are not watching the odometer.

Stop 3
Charyn Canyon — Valley of Castles
- From previous:
- 55 km · 45 min drive
- Stay:
- ~4 h
A signed spur road leaves the A-351 roughly 187 km from Almaty and runs 10 km to the park eco-post, where you pay the entrance fee and show your passport. The sealed road continues another few kilometres to the visitor centre and car park at the canyon rim. From here the main trail (LH201) descends steeply into the Valley of Castles — a 3 km corridor of eroded sandstone towers, many reaching 20–30 m, in shades of red, ochre, and yellow that shift with the sun. The trail follows the canyon floor along the Charyn River and loops back to the rim. Allow 2–3 hours for the full walk. The visitor centre has a café, toilets, and a souvenir kiosk. Picnic spots line the rim with views across the gorge.
If time allows, the relic Sogdian ash-tree forest sits 20 km further down the valley road — a short walk through ancient trees in a cooler microclimate is a good counterpoint to the open canyon heat.

Stop 4
Return to Almaty
- From previous:
- 210 km · 210 min drive
The return drive follows the same A-351 west to Almaty, roughly 200 km and 3 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic. Afternoon traffic entering Almaty from the east can slow noticeably after 17:00, especially around the toll booth. Leaving the canyon by 15:00 keeps you ahead of the main evening queue. Chundzha is available for fuel again on the return if needed. The drive back across the steppe offers the same flat horizon and occasional sightings of eagles perching on roadside utility poles.
