Overview
The trail south from Shymbulak passes through the Tuyuksu mountaineering camp and reaches the Alpinists' Memorial at around 2,500 m — a monument to climbers killed in the Zailiysky Alatau. The gorge narrows here, and the valley walls rise into vertical granite faces called the Bastions, reaching 240 m in height on both sides. This section takes 30–45 minutes from the resort and sets the tone for what follows: the gorge is enclosed and dramatic, with the Malaya Almatinka river audible below. Above the memorial the route passes a staffed checkpoint (Tuyuksu Gate) where park access is confirmed.
