About this trip
Butakovka Gorge cuts southeast from Almaty into the Ile-Alatau range, and its pair of waterfalls — Lower Butakovka (~30 m) and Upper Butakovka (~20 m) — sit at around 2,100 m and 2,500 m respectively. The access road leaves Dostyk Avenue near the Butakovka village turn-off, climbs 6 km of paved road to the national park eco-post, and then gives way to a well-worn dirt trail that follows the Butakovka River upstream through Tien Shan spruce and wild apple forest.
The one-way distance from the eco-post to the lower waterfall is roughly 3 km with around 450 m of elevation gain — a moderate 1.5–2 hour climb. A further 45–60 minutes up the same valley brings you to the upper fall. The trail crosses the river at a couple of points on stepping stones or log bridges; in late spring snowmelt these crossings require care. Most of the path is straightforward, but the last 800 m before the lower fall steepens noticeably over rocky terrain.
The gorge is accessible year-round, though winter visits require microspikes and reward hikers with frozen ice-pillar formations. Peak water flow and the most dramatic cascade happens in May and June. By July the trail is busy on weekends; arriving early keeps the gorge quiet. Autumn colour in the spruce and birch forest runs from late September through October and is worth the trade-off in lower water volume.
The national park eco-post charges a small entrance fee. No special permit is required — a standard national park day pass covers access. The paved road to the eco-post is easily managed by any sedan. Fuel, supplies, and cafes are all available in Almaty before departure; there are no services inside the gorge.

Stop 1
Almaty — Departure
Leave central Almaty heading south-east on Dostyk Avenue (проспект Достык). Watch for the signed Butakovka turn-off to the left, past the Medeo area but before the Shymbulak ski resort access road. From the turn-off, a paved road climbs roughly 6 km up through the Butakovka village to the Ile-Alatau National Park eco-post where you park. The drive from downtown Almaty takes 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.

Stop 2
Eco-Post Trailhead
- From previous:
- 7 km · 25 min drive
- Stay:
- ~1.5 h
From the eco-post parking area, a dirt road follows the Butakovka River upstream through spruce and birch forest. The first 1.8 km is a gradual incline along the river bank; the path is broad and well-marked. After crossing a small bridge the trail narrows and begins to climb more steeply. Two or three river crossings on stepping stones or log bridges break up the ascent — in late May and June these can be slippery with snowmelt. The Lower Butakovka Waterfall, dropping roughly 30 m over a dark rock face, appears at around the 3 km mark after roughly 1.5–2 hours of walking.

Stop 3
Lower Butakovka Waterfall
- From previous:
- 3 km · 0 min drive
- Stay:
- ~0.5 h
The Lower Butakovka Waterfall spills about 30 m down a wall of dark granite, landing in a shallow pool at roughly 2,100 m altitude. The spray keeps the surrounding rocks and vegetation a vivid green through summer. From here, those with energy can continue up the valley for another 45–60 minutes to reach the Upper Butakovka Waterfall (~20 m, ~2,500 m altitude), which stays partially frozen well into June. Most day-hikers turn back at the lower fall and return by the same trail, making it a 6 km round trip from the eco-post.
